The CBIC Tech Town Hall meeting on November 20 will introduce data from a brand-new study by Virginia Commonwealth University's Center for Public Policy at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.
Commissioned by CBIC and the City of Charlottesville Office of Economic Development, the key objective of the study was to understand more about the composition of the high-tech industry and its role in the region's economy. The project is an important part of our continuing conversation on the benefits of balancing growth in this region through development of the technology business sector. At this luncheon meeting, we will reveal the results of the study, profiling - Technology companies located here, and University of Virginia divisions engaged in high tech
- What business and industrial sectors they serve
- Whether there are clusters of sectors now served that can be a basis for attracting other companies to locate here
- Wage and employment data
- How the region compares with other major regions in Virginia
- Economic impact, in actual dollars, of the high-tech industry on the Charlottesville region
The presentation will be enhanced by a panel of business executives who will discuss a variety of related issues, including: - Recruiting and retaining a skilled and engaged workforce
- How to build a critical mass of talent from which to draw for entry level, mid-level and senior positions to accommodate business growth and expansion.
- Working with area colleges to let graduates know that Charlottesville offers a viable option for building a rewarding career
- How tech-based businesses in Charlottesville can cooperate even as they compete for a relatively fixed number of workers in an environment of very low unemployment
