How to build a company around your technology. Do you have a technology or perhaps even just an idea, or maybe you've even started your company to commercialize your technology, but are now unsure of the next steps? Building a successful company requires vision, skill, determination and a talented committed team. It takes something extraordinary to translate innovative technology into a profitable business. But what does that mean?
At this April 17th educational and networking luncheon, a collaborative effort amongst the University of Virginia, VaBIO, and the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council (CBIC), participants will hear how Dr. Barry Johnson took Privaris from start-up to its current status. Dr. Johnson joined the U.Va. faculty in 1984 and co-founded Privaris, a biometric security company, in 1998. Privaris has now successfully raised two venture rounds of $15.6 million and $3.3 million as well as an angel round of approximately $8 million. Dr. Johnson still serves on the Privaris executive team and board, but is now Senior Associate Dean for Research and Professor in the Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia. Come hear how this one academic researcher and entrepreneur used passion, transparency, communication, and humility to navigate the commercialization landscape to build a successful company. This event is ideally suited for U.Va.'s emerging faculty and student entrepreneurs as well as regional company executives and management. It will provide practical, nuts-and-bolts lessons to help entrepreneurs hone the skills needed to create, manage, and grow successful businesses at any stage, and to facilitate networking amongst area research entrepreneurs and industry professionals.
